Filling Voids

Postby Eckertwa » Mon Mar 30, 2015 6:17 am

While building my J230 I've noticed that several areas have the potential to trap air inside them. One example of this is the end caps for the horizontal stabilizer. I would assume that on a hot day the trapped air in the cap will expand and possibly rupture the part. Or worse, the cap might not get completely sealed and water gets trapped inside of it, potentially throwing off the CG.

One solution would be to add drain/vent holes. But this might encourage insects to make a home for themselves inside my plane.

Another option I am considering is filling the voids with a mix and pour foam. Since the density of the foam is 2-lbs/cu-ft, I don't think there will be much of a weight penalty.

Thoughts? Has this ever been an issue?

Hi
My UL 450 when I bought it had these caps filled with foam, but over time it had started to rot and did not look pretty, I have since dug it out so at the moment they are empty. If I get the opportunity I may in fill with a Balsa wood block painted white
Cheers

I have successfully used expanding foam to fill voids. It is a little nasty but does the job very well.
