Standard Tacho

Postby weirdfish » Thu Nov 16, 2017 3:35 pm

Afternoon gentlemen, does anyone know of a source for the standard VDO tacho with hourmeter as ours seems to have died. It's actually the hour meter that given up the ghost, the tacho works fine (as fine as they do!!) and I don't want get into changing to the whole tacho system right now so was hoping to just replace like for like. A good plan in theory that seems to have fallen flat on it's face trying to find one.

Cheers

Steve,

I may have one at home. The problem is that there were 2 sizes of Tacho. Very little difference in size but there was a difference. I will have to see if I can find it and cannot promise but I am sure I remember seeing it a few days ago.

My tacho plays up every winter in that the hour logging figures disappear occasionally. Whilst they re-appear at times, the problem seems to be related to dampness.
The tacho still keeps a log of the hours despite the figures vanishing & the increase is shown every time it decides to stop hiding.

Suggest you try a hair dryer on low heat behind the panel for a short period to see if this is happening to yours, applied heat sometimes works on mine.

I agree. The tacho does not like cold and damp. I also find that the recorded hours numbers go AWOL each winter and slowly come back when the weather warms up. I find the same erratic behaviour with the Ameri-King altitude encoder that is attached to the transponder. I can only conclude that hangers are not the best environment to keep electronics working well.
I did try think of replacing the VDO tacho at on time but I also experienced the difficulty of identifying an equivalent with confidence. After a futile and unsuccessful search for a replacement the sun came out, the weather warmed up, and the tacho started working again so I left it alone.

Hi Steve,

I have found one of each size. One is 80mm and one is 85mm. They are both the same except for the size. I think the 85mm one was used in the older Jabs and the 80mm later on. You now only seem to be able to buy the 80mm. I have no idea how many hours are on the clocks. The casing will need to be touched up a bit (it's really easy to scratch off the paint on the bezels but easy to spray black).

If you contact me, you are welcome to have for free whichever one you need.
