I found this one on a Sonex group. The engine is a total loss, and there is some head scratching going on as to what the root cause of the failure could be.

Report is interesting but inconclusive. There does not seem to be any logical explanation and the three proposed seem unlikely. Piston disintegrated which makes it difficult to determine the sequence of events. I would like a better look at the bore as it smells of some sort of gudgeon pin failure. Perhaps a problem with retaining clips or a fractured cylinder skirt which eventualy broke off ? A more detailed analysis is needed ...
